Most lucrative businesses to start

It sounds very interesting to many people, but perhaps also far from home. Starting your own business. There is so much to choose from and what really suits you?

In this article I’m going to tell you more about the motivations around starting your own business. I will also briefly mention the advantages and disadvantages that exist and which I personally have experienced.

Why start your own business?

The reason for starting your own business is different for everyone. Some are not satisfied with their employer and would like to do something for themselves to be their own boss. The other would like to earn some extra money in the evening hours to save for that trip around the world and yet someone else just wants to get rich.

My personal start in (online) entrepreneurship came about a little bit naturally. I liked online marketing and especially SEO and to learn it well I started an affiliate website. In the first year I did this just to learn, but after a while even money started coming in.

Now I can make my money with the things I really like, namely doing online marketing and operating different websites. For me, this has some very clear advantages:

I can work anytime, anywhere. On vacation, on the train, at the airport or just from bed. With today’s online work, some companies allow this as well, but your boss is often not happy when you tell him that you are going to work from Bali or whatever island for the next six months.

I don’t have to answer to anyone. I am my own boss, so I can do what I want. If I don’t feel like it one day, am sick or just have other plans, I don’t have to call anyone for that. I also don’t have to take things like vacation days into account.

The income potential is much higher. Working as an employee automatically ensures that on a 40-hour contract you get paid for 40 hours, regardless of the results you achieve. So you will never be able to make money for more than 24 hours a day if you work 24 hours. You’ll be at your maximum relatively quickly.

Freedom for creativity. Because you are your own boss and are doing what you really like, you can also use your creativity within your company. In most companies you work according to protocols. You make your own protocols and also have the freedom to try out new things at a time of your choosing.

These are a number of important motivations for me to be involved in my own business and to start several of my own businesses. Yet it is not all hosanna. There are also disadvantages to starting your own business:

Uncertain income. Are you working entirely for yourself? Then you are completely dependent on your income. You can do so well, but something like the Corona pandemic can throw a spanner in the works.

No pension. By default, you do not build up a pension when you work for yourself. You are responsible for making sure you still have some money in addition to your state pension in your old age.

Bookkeeping. Are you just starting your business? Then bookkeeping is something you should definitely consider. These kinds of peripheral issues are also involved in starting a business. Fortunately, there are handy tools that can help you with this. You can compare accounting programs on this page.

Colleagues. In most cases you start a business alone. So you have to get used to the fact that you are also working alone a lot. In my field, online marketing, that means a lot of sitting alone at the computer. This is not always fun and therefore something you have to take into account. The nice thing about working for a boss is that you have colleagues and you don’t have to pay for the Friday afternoon drinks yourself ;).
